My GATE 2015 preparation Experience – CSE

Hi Innovators!

I recently gave my GATE Exam. So I thought i should put a post on my experience.

I started my preparation in Pune last June. Only thing i knew back then was that this Exam takes you to the most prestigious engineering colleges of India, the IITs & NITs. I had little information about  IISc Bangalore. Also I thought IIIT-H, BITS are also part of one exam called GATE. I joined Vani Institute – GATE coaching with the mindset of getting the B.Tech knowledge back most of which was forgotten. But preparing for GATE Exam turned out to be my love at First Sight when I attended my first class of DBMS. Our teacher was so amazing that I later again went to attend his classes in Bangalore. DBMS was always my favorite subject. I was well versed with ER diagrams, ACID properties, transactions and concurrency control during my college days. But Normalization was something i feared. My teacher taught this with such an ease that even today i feel that normalization was so easy and i had made a mountain from the pile of my fears.

DBMS went well. Next up was Computer organization. Honestly, I had never studied this subject in my college. One of my favorite subject in B.tech was Microprocessors. So with that i was quite comfortable with Instructions. But Computer organization and Architecture from Gate point of view is very different yet interesting. That again was because of our teacher in Coaching. He taught in depth and I was cleared with my concepts.

After 1 month of joining my coaching, I was sure that I only feared subjects, They are the love of my life. Its like you like someone and you never propose because you fear of loosing it forever. Studying for gate was something like this for me.  I never opened my books because I feared that I might be wasting time reading the book. All one needs is practical analysis. Theory happens along with it. I was so wrong.

One of my biggest challenges was fighting with time. I was a very slow reader. I did calculations slow. I liked analysis more than conclusions. So I used to circle around the topics without being able to complete them. And that’s what happened in my preparation too. By the end of August I was ready to fight my fears and do what i love. With parental and peer pressure, I knew I had lil time to decide. But I had already made my mind. After taking consent from my family I resigned my beloved job at this MNC I was working at. This was tough decision also because this was my maiden attempt at GATE and you hear toppers are the ones who have tried at lease once before.

Post resignation, Things went even more challenging. I had to focus not only on preparation but also on my backup plans. I started saving my now left salaries(3 months notice), at personal front I closed all social media.  I focused on my classes more. This is the most important thing one should do.

In November, I decided to shift to Bangalore to stay with my sister. Reason being I wanted to continue my classes. till now I was still left with Computer Networks, Mathematics, SE/WT. So I geared up and finshed my 1st round of course by December. Well that was just the start. By now I remember only little of my initial classes. Many topics were conceptually not clear. So Now I had to practice problems, clarify all topics, revise and revise and revise. In January, I focussed on Test Papers. I had enrolled in TestBook.com, Gate Academy Test series, Gate forum Test Series.. Gate Forum Test series were nice. TestBook has feature of live test which is amazing for real time practice. Gate Exam felt like another mock test to me because of these live test.

I am still awaiting my result. So I cant tell how I performed. But more than the result, my journey was beautiful. From not even knowing quick sort, I can now work with concepts of Dynamic Programming. I still have a long way to go but this experience was so amazing that i want to recommend every engineer to at least once prepare for GATE Exam. It will make you much more confident. And your perception towards engineering subjects change.

  1. hi…i also attempted it first time …i was also amzed by knowing these subjects…but i made many silly mistaked during my exam…so i am disappointed by that…what should i do……nd how much marks r u expecting
    from GATE

    1. Hi Piyush,
I evaluated my answers too and realized that I did a lot of mistakes. I am expecting around 50 marks. What-so-ever the result may be. Its not over. There are still interviews, other exams like IIIT-H, BITS, among others left. I am now working on my subjects once more to get the confidence for future. Why don’t you also get back to working on your mistakes.
Wish you a very best in GATE.
